Have you ever wondered how you can get your truck to perform better? One of the best ways is to swap out its engine control module! These are a vehicle’s onboard computers that use data to optimize engine performance.
Although new ECMs are the best option, they can set you back thousands of dollars. The next best alternative is to get a used or remanufactured ECM—but what’s the difference between the two?
Here’s a breakdown of how used and remanufactured ECMs differ.
Used ECMs
Used ECMs—like their name suggests—are taken from previously-used vehicles like those that are significantly damaged and no longer deemed road-worthy. They’re a cheap yet risky ECM replacement as they’re not covered by a warranty.
Used ECMs require reprogramming by an ECM expert as they’re calibrated for another vehicle’s engine. However, this doesn’t guarantee that they’ll work. Their reliability depends on how extensively they’ve been used and how old they are.
Remanufactured ECMs
Remanufactured ECMs are built by combining both old and new parts from multiple ECMs. The process typically involves taking a used ECM and swapping individual parts that don’t work with new ECM parts. Remanufactured ECMs are also covered under warranty because they’re tested before they’re sold.
Remanufactured ECMs must be programmed before they’re sold in the same way as used ECMs. However, remanufactured ECMs can be reprogrammed to provide more accurate data than used ECMS as they typically contain several new components.
Which One’s Better?
Remanufactured ECMs are ultimately better than used ECMs for numerous reasons. Firstly, they’re more likely to come with a longer warranty as they’re tested for things like performance and reliability before they’re sold. They’re also newer than used ECMs and therefore offer greater accuracy.
The only advantage of buying a used ECM is its low price. However, we would recommend shelling out a bit extra for a remanufactured ECM as the benefits you’ll get will surpass the additional price you must pay for it.
