The Importance of Engine Control Modules in Semis

Did you know the US trucking industry is worth around $730 billion? That’s more than the GDP of Singapore and South Africa put together! Trucking refers to the use of trucks to transport goods. The most commonly used trucking vehicles are semi-trailer trucks—also known as “semis.”

Semis contain onboard computers called engine control modules (ECMs) to optimize the truck’s performance over long routes. But how do ECMs help semis cover massive distances when transporting goods?

Here’s a breakdown of three reasons why ECMs are crucial to semis.

1. They Regulate Engine Power

Semis house diesel engines that work by burning a mixture of air and fuel to drive the engine’s pistons. ECMs manage the ratio of air and fuel used in this process throughout the semi’s journey. If the mixture used by the engine contains more diesel, then the semi’s power output will be higher. This is vital when semis need to be driven uphill.

2. They Prevent Engine Malfunctions

Imagine driving a semi and breaking down in the middle of nowhere—it would be a nightmare! If the injection timing of fuel and air into a semi’s engine isn’t optimal, then it’ll break down. Fortunately, ECMs prevent this by regulating the air-to-fuel ratio inside the engine.

ECMs also help semis start up without stalling. The pistons in any vehicle’s engine require the most power when the vehicle is started. When a driver starts a semi, the onboard ECM allows more fuel than air into the engine for stronger combustion to fire up the engine. The ECM then reduces the amount of fuel in the mixture depending on the gear and speed the semi is driven in.

3. They Optimize Fuel Efficiency

Did you know the price of diesel in the US is increasing every week? Fortunately, ECMs are capable of monitoring the amount of diesel used in the fuel-air mixture of a semi’s engine. Therefore, they can be used to maximize the fuel efficiency of semis.

However, ECM data on fuel usage isn’t always accurate—so it’s best to cross-check it against other data such as fleet fuel records.
