The former involves restoring the default firmware the ECM came with from the factory – or in other words – resetting the ECM to its factory settings. When it comes to Caterpillar ECM recalibration, most people opt for the programming route as it’s the “safe” option. The factory firmware that Caterpillar ECMs come with are designed to work in all types of environments. They account for varying fuel qualities, road conditions, geographical conditions, climates, and so forth.
