An ECM reflash probably isn’t your first instinct when your vehicle’s engine starts to falter. But it might just do the job and extend its lifespan.

You don’t have to wait for your vehicle to give up before opting for an ECM reflash. If your vehicle shows any signs of malfunction, it’s best to run a diagnostic test beforehand than to wait for things to go south.

The following are some of the most common vehicle issues that an ECM reflash can instantly resolve:

Carbon Buildup On The Injection Engines

Carbon buildup on top of a vehicle’s engine is normal. But letting it sit there can be harmful to the vehicle’s performance.

Reflashing the ECM and installing new software will reduce the conditions causing the buildup. The new software will readjust the spark and valve timings, reducing carbon deposits as a result.

Converter Efficiency Codes

When a vehicle keeps giving you trouble even after replacing the converter and the oxygen sensor, reflashing is a long-term solution for this frequent problem.

Most converters start at around 99% efficiency. However, after 4,000 miles of driving, the converters can taper off to 95% efficiency. You have to monitor the efficiency drop. If it’s not dropping more than a few percentages, the converter will clean the exhaust thoroughly. However, if the efficiency drops far below 92%, you have a problem.

New software installation as part of reflashing the ECM can decrease and monitor these efficiency drops.

Oil Consumption

If you notice your engine has been using more oil than it requires, you might want to reflash the ECM first before diving into rebuilding your vehicle’s engine.

The new programming will change the valve timings so a vacuum can’t be created when the combustion strokes do their job.

Brake Issues

Your ABS module is directly linked to the condition and health of your brakes. If you notice that your vehicle’s rear pads are wearing out faster than the front ones, a software reflash might help you install new pad formulations.
